 Changing Between Different Foams

This is a question we hear often from our customers: is it possible to switch between 0.5# and 2# foam? The answer is yes! Not only is it possible, it is also quite easy! There is not even any cleaning of the equipment required, however, there are a few things to be considered to avoid trouble or costly mistakes.
Let’s assume the following scenario:
You sprayed until just now 0.5# and need to spray 2#: you’ll move the transfer pumps from the A-side of the 0.5# foam to the A-side of the 2# foam, and from the B-side of the 0.5# foam to the B-side of the 2# foam. It is obvious that A and B never get mixed; however, we have heard about this going wrong more than just a few times. If you have a recirculation kit (Fusion part 246362, P2 part 23436-03), you make sure that the recirculation hoses go the 0.5# foam. (This is the assumption we made above, we just sprayed 0.5# foam). In this example we assume that you have an E-20 and 100’ of hose. According to the table below, you’ll turn on the proportioner and slowly pump 58 strokes at very low pressure. When that is done, you do a little test shot off target, and see if the foam looks good. Then you are ready!
Here are a few more important details:
  1. 1. The number of strokes indicated in the table may vary due to length of transfer lines and pressure in the hose. A hose pressurized at 1500 psi holds more material than a hose at 900 psi.
  2. 2. If you want to go fast and be on the safe side, add another 10 or 15 strokes, I have never had problems pumping a few pounds too many into the 0.5# foam since it is agitated anyway. Nonetheless, this could be potentially bad advice!
  3. 3. You may not need to switch the A-side. The A-side is quite the same in the entire industry. Nonetheless, they are often labeled differently, and not changing it could be a problem.
Please call CPI at (330) 861-5200 for recirculation kits which work with other guns.
